Be Still and Know that I am God
11.12.06 (4:33 pm)   [edit]
In a little less than I week I will be getting on a Bus and traveling to a Retreat entitled 'Be Still and Know that I am God'. It will be eight days of Silence, Prayer, and Meditation.

"A time to rest, be in nature and deepen your spiritual journey — all in an atmosphere of prayer-filled silence. This is an intentional silence that helps persons on retreat encounter that still, quiet, healing place within — where there can be openness to the movement of the Spirit. An hour of individual spiritual direction is offered each day and the community of retreatants comes together daily for meals in silence and participatory worship."

My daily life is full of noise. Mostly it is joyful noise, but it also contains angry noise, stressful noise and the loudest noise of all- Frustrated Silence.

Frustrated Silence because the words remain in my head. I do not speak them in an attempt to get the other noise at a minimum. But of course that ever does anyone any good and this silence can no longer remain.

To trade it for Chosen Silence- feels like I've been given a precious jewel. I hold it in my hand and just feel the relief and joy of it wash over me. I crave silence. I crave quiet. I have not heard my inner voice speak for so long, I wonder if we still speak the same language.

I feel that my soul is withering on the vine and this choice of silence will be the sweet water that revives it. It waits patience and still knowing that in mere days I will feast on Silence and Solitude and the voice within and the voice of God will speak as one.

Sounds great.

I'll confess to not handling silence very well. And I know, in our worship services at church, too much silence makes people nervous. Seems there almost always has to be someone speaking, or music playing.

I'm soon to travel to my place of retreat, to spend several days just with God. I'm needing it, so I can come back with strength to be able to truly help others, and be creative with the words that I say.

it's funny how some people have reacted to my going to the silent retreat. Some of them have said the idea of going that long without speaking makes them feel physically ill. Others just can't conprehend why i would want to do it. Some, though have gotten this look on their faces that is akin to bliss and I can tell they'd like to leave the hectic world and join me.

I personal crave the quiet and am looking forward to it. I know it will be hard at times but totally worth it. I think the hard part will be in the evenings when i'm in my room - with a roommate- and not being able to talk to her. or waking in the morning and not saying "good morning" to her. She will be a stranger so that will be hard.

the other hard part is very mundane. when i get bored i get the munchies. I know I'll be sitting around trying to be quiet, but all I'll want to do is snack!

Where is your place of retreat? what do you do? if you don't mind me asking.

Hope it's going well sweet. Alas, I wish it weren't all lost on me.

Who the heck is taking care of the ruler? Eight days without Mom? Yipes.
