Something Wicca This Way Comes
I feel so special right now, look Ma! I won an award!

It aint easy being Green
05.19.06 (5:01 pm)   [edit]
These past few weeks I've spent most of my days out in the garden. Aphids attacked the Valerian and slugs ate my pumpkins.

we don’t use chemicals in the garden so dealing with the aphids meant sending my son on a ladybug hunt and using water to wash and drown the aphids from the young new shoots. Water was also used for the slugs- a big bucket that the slugs were dumped into and left over night- yuck! But it’s a good non-chemical way to deal with them.

I am slowly moving towards green products in my home is well. This will take longer because I feel it would be a waste to just toss them out and sart fresh, so over the summer as we finishing using the laudry soap and cleaning supplies I’ll buy eco friendly replacements.

Why am I doing this? Why would I spend more money, take more time scrubbing because truthfully eco friendly product just don’t work as well as Mr. Clean? Because the world IS warming up. The Polar bears are drowning because there isn’t enough ice for them to survive. Some researchers give these bear 20 years before we drive them to extinction.

This though makes me feel ill.

I want my son to grow up in a clean world. I want my son to grow up. Period. And at the rate we’re going it’s NOT going to happen and that thought makes be feel disgusting.

I’ve considered along time whether or not I would write about my feelings on these things. They are controversial, extremist to some. But I’m scared for my child’s life, if he doesn’t get cancer from the chemicals in out water and food, them global warming will destroy the planet and he’ll die along with it.

Do I have all the answers?

Nope, not even close, but I’m okay with that because really smart people DO. So I’m going to read and learn from them.

There’s this quote from a movie that’s stuck with me. The character says “I’ve always believed that if I cared about one thing, I’d have to care about everything and go raving mad.”

I think this is how people feel about the environment. It’s so huge, there’s so much involved that they are scared to just step a toe in and become completely overwhelmed. But that’s a lame lazy attitude and to be honest I’m sick of it. I’m sick of it in myself and sick of it in others.

I can’t force people to change. I can’t demand that they change their lifestyles, but I can tell them what I’m doing. Tell them what I’ve learned and set a good example- weren’t we talk that as children?

There’s tons of simple things that can be done, and one doesn’t have to do them all at once either.

David Suzuki’s Nature challenge is a good place to look for some ideas:

http://www.davidsuzuki.org/NatureChallenge/" title="http://www.davidsuzuki.org/NatureChallenge/" target="_blank"http://www.davidsuzuki.org/Na...

Earth911 has tons of list of things you can do:

Cleaner air:

http://www.earth911.org/maste...

Green Shopping:

http://www.earth911.org/maste...

there's lots of other stuff there too, go take a look.

Another option is to look for an environmental group in your local area and become a member. Even if you never volunteer and do nothing more than sign a petition now and them your support and yes your $$ will enable others to ‘do the dirty work’. This weekend is my son’s friend’s third birthday. As a gift I’m donating money to the Western Canada Wilderness Committee in his name. He loves Orca Whales, so what better way to share that love than to help save them. Read about who I’m giving my money to here:

http://www.wildernesscommitte...

I’m not trying to preach, or anything like that. I just feel it’s time to talk about this and I need to speak. As I said I don’t have all the answers to this issues. But I’m not going to sit around and let it happen without taking some action. I’ll write more about this later. Time for us to make dinner.

We went to California last year, and spent a day at the beach north of LA. There was globules of tar everywhere I would step. It got all over the bottoms of my feet, and was rather disgusting. I think there are things we all need to do to make our world a cleaner place. We try to recycle, and not waste electricity or water. I keep my car tuned up. I don't know if global warming is man-made, or part of the cycle of nature, but is is obviously happening. I'm glad they aren't going to be drilling for oil off the coast of Florida anytime soon.

I'm very glad you have not entirely left us here at t-blog!

If one person in every household would make the same committment as you have...just think of how much improvement that would be. It really does take more and harder work to live as you are trying. But..others have accomplished it. So it can be done. Happy cleaning and that was a great birthday idea for your son. And just think it won't be laying around the house, always in the way.

My old Science teacher told us his method of getting rid of slugs by using beer! I can't remember the exact method, but I think he said to either use an empty beer can (with still some remnants of beer) or use a partial can of beer. You stick in the soil, and wait for the slugs to come.

There are people I sincerely despise. They lack morals, character, and honesty. They reap a harvest of death. In case you can't tell, I'm talking about Rev. Fairmoon here. To plunge right into it, Rev. Fairmoon has been offering misguided bourgeoisie a lot of money to threaten the common good.

This is blood money, plain and simple. Anyone thinking of accepting it should realize that it's debatable whether we mustn't tolerate the likes of Fairmoon. However, no one can disagree that the time is always right to do what is right. That's why we must undeniably clarify and correct some of the inaccuracies present in Rev. Fairmoon's rantings. The first step in that process is to realize that she thinks I'm trying to say that we should abandon the institutionalized and revered concept of democracy. Wait! I just heard something. Oh, never mind; it's just the sound of the point zooming way over Rev. Fairmoon's head. I've tried explaining to Rev. Fairmoon's co-conspirators that I proudly adopt this stand. Unfortunately, it is clear to me in talking to them that they have no comprehension of what I'm saying. I might as well be talking to creatures from Mars. In fact, I'd bet Martians would be more likely to discern that Rev. Fairmoon's encomiasts have been staggering around like punch-drunk fighters hit too many times -- stunned, confused, betrayed, and trying desperately to rationalize Rev. Fairmoon's disdainful ramblings. It is indubitably not a pretty sight. Rev. Fairmoon disregards any evidence that contradicts her views. Get that straight, please. Any other thinking is blame-shoving or responsibility-dodging. Furthermore, I'm not writing this letter for your entertainment. I'm not even writing it for your education. I'm writing it for our very survival.

Curiously, Rev. Fairmoon has -- not once, but several times -- been able to lead a deranged jihad against those who oppose her without anyone stopping her. How long can that go on? As long as her prodigal politics are kept on life support. That's why we have to pull the plug on them and evaluate the tactics she has used against me. She promises that if we give her and her lieutenants additional powers, she'll guard us from mean-spirited anthropophagi. My question, however is, Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? -- Who will guard the guards?

Take it from me: Rev. Fairmoon would not hesitate to smear people of impeccable character and reputation if she felt she could benefit from doing so. Her magic-bullet explanations carry multiple connotations, ranging from the militant (they withhold information and disseminate half truths and whole lies) to the odious (they influence the attitudes of dominant culture towards any environment or activity that is predominantly disruptive). The best example of this, culled from many, would have to be the time she tried to institutionalize lexiphanicism through systematic violence, distorted religion, and dubious science. Let me be clear. Almost every day, Rev. Fairmoon outreaches herself in setting new records for arrogance, deceit, and greed. It's obviously breathtaking to watch her. Whenever anyone states the obvious -- that she has shown no compunction in committing character assassinations or engaging in full-scale vendettas -- discussion naturally progresses towards the question, "Does her oversized ego demand that she put increased disruptive powers in the hands of ultra-asinine perjurers?" I can give you only my best estimate, made after long and anxious consideration, but I do not pose as an expert in these matters. I can say only that whenever she is presented with the truth, she cringes like a vampire from a cross. Now, I could go off on that point alone, but she should have instructed her advocates not to help pouty, unforgiving fruitcakes back up their prejudices with "scientific" proof. Don't make the mistake of thinking otherwise. Rev. Fairmoon does, and that's why someone has been giving her brain a very thorough washing, and now Rev. Fairmoon is trying to do the same to us. This letter has gone on far too long, in my opinion, and probably yours as well. So let me end it by saying merely that it is both frustrating and frightening to observe the extreme ignorance -- no, idiocy -- present in Rev. Fairmoon's gruesome arguments.

I've seen you make coherent and interesting comments in the past. And then, you put out such drivel as this. I know it is computer generated, etc. What is going on here? Is this to be humorous? Considered sophisticated? Some of you fairmoon frequenters help me to understand this guy? I know this is not my fight to wage. I know I'm a Baptist minister, and she's a Wiccan priestess (right?), and so we are of opposite polarities in the list of religions, but I kind of like this lady. She can handle well a difference of opinion, and even a debate, - but this is rather strange!

I'm with Dave! What a weirdo for that drivel comment. The whole point of blogging is to learn about others and hopefully become more educated about a variety of viewpoints.

What a load of garbage.

Wanting to live low-impact/green is a noble goal. Naturally, there are extremists at both ends of the spectrum, but I do not believe Fairmoon is one of them. Your hateful screed is completely uncalled for.

If you have differences in ideology, fine. State and discuss them. Using a computer generated attempt at character asassination is cowardly...
