did i hit a sore spot?
05.28.06 (8:42 am)   [edit]
apparently i did, (please see the comment section of "it ain't easy being green") with my last post about global warming. I'm not looking for a fight. I considered deleting the comment, but that would just hide the fact that this person can't speak for himself.

I'm not even going to respond to this computer generated dribble. and yes I will say it, these long winded rambling comments are generated at the following website.

learn to write fo yourself buddy, if you're going to comment here.

It aint easy being Green
05.19.06 (5:01 pm)   [edit]
These past few weeks I've spent most of my days out in the garden. Aphids attacked the Valerian and slugs ate my pumpkins.

we don’t use chemicals in the garden so dealing with the aphids meant sending my son on a ladybug hunt and using water to wash and drown the aphids from the young new shoots. Water was also used for the slugs- a big bucket that the slugs were dumped into and left over night- yuck! But it’s a good non-chemical way to deal with them.

I am slowly moving towards green products in my home is well. This will take longer because I feel it would be a waste to just toss them out and sart fresh, so over the summer as we finishing using the laudry soap and cleaning supplies I’ll buy eco friendly replacements.

Why am I doing this? Why would I spend more money, take more time scrubbing because truthfully eco friendly product just don’t work as well as Mr. Clean? Because the world IS warming up. The Polar bears are drowning because there isn’t enough ice for them to survive. Some researchers give these bear 20 years before we drive them to extinction.

This though makes me feel ill.

I want my son to grow up in a clean world. I want my son to grow up. Period. And at the rate we’re going it’s NOT going to happen and that thought makes be feel disgusting.

I’ve considered along time whether or not I would write about my feelings on these things. They are controversial, extremist to some. But I’m scared for my child’s life, if he doesn’t get cancer from the chemicals in out water and food, them global warming will destroy the planet and he’ll die along with it.

Do I have all the answers?

Nope, not even close, but I’m okay with that because really smart people DO. So I’m going to read and learn from them.

There’s this quote from a movie that’s stuck with me. The character says “I’ve always believed that if I cared about one thing, I’d have to care about everything and go raving mad.”

I think this is how people feel about the environment. It’s so huge, there’s so much involved that they are scared to just step a toe in and become completely overwhelmed. But that’s a lame lazy attitude and to be honest I’m sick of it. I’m sick of it in myself and sick of it in others.

I can’t force people to change. I can’t demand that they change their lifestyles, but I can tell them what I’m doing. Tell them what I’ve learned and set a good example- weren’t we talk that as children?

There’s tons of simple things that can be done, and one doesn’t have to do them all at once either.

David Suzuki’s Nature challenge is a good place to look for some ideas:

http://www.davidsuzuki.org/NatureChallenge/" title="http://www.davidsuzuki.org/NatureChallenge/" target="_blank"http://www.davidsuzuki.org/Na...

Earth911 has tons of list of things you can do:

Cleaner air:

http://www.earth911.org/maste...

Green Shopping:

http://www.earth911.org/maste...

there's lots of other stuff there too, go take a look.

Another option is to look for an environmental group in your local area and become a member. Even if you never volunteer and do nothing more than sign a petition now and them your support and yes your $$ will enable others to ‘do the dirty work’. This weekend is my son’s friend’s third birthday. As a gift I’m donating money to the Western Canada Wilderness Committee in his name. He loves Orca Whales, so what better way to share that love than to help save them. Read about who I’m giving my money to here:

http://www.wildernesscommitte...

I’m not trying to preach, or anything like that. I just feel it’s time to talk about this and I need to speak. As I said I don’t have all the answers to this issues. But I’m not going to sit around and let it happen without taking some action. I’ll write more about this later. Time for us to make dinner.
