Science and Witchcraft
12.30.05 (11:29 am)   [edit]
My hubbie and I watched the first episode of Cosmos last night. What a cool show! I mean this show was created in the late 70’s and yet everything that Carl talked about is still relevant to day. I especially liked that Cosmic Calendar that he talked about towards the end. He explained the Universe timeline as a 12 month calendar with the Big Bang occurring Jan 1st. Humans are only in the last couple of hours of Dec 31 and our recorded history is only last ten or 20 seconds! I don’t remember the exact numbers, but it just goes to show how unbelievably small and insignificant we humans are in the grand scheme of the universe. Makes me want to hid under the covers, this universe is so immense I feel overwhelmed.

And yet as we are the only planet, that we know of, with conscious life on it (I’m loath to say intelligent- had you seen humans lately?), we take center stage- at least in our own minds anyways. As a result of our, so far, unique relationship with the universe we can truly say we are One.

The character of Gil Grisom says in a CSI episode when someone asks if he believes in conscious life beyond our planet and he replies something like, “if there is, I’m sure they’re intelligent to stay away from us.” I love that line. Personally when it comes to ET’s and little green men, I stick with Elly Arroway's father, from Contact, “If there isn’t, it’s an awful waste of space.”

But I digress. I wonder if at this point someone out there is wondering how a witch who believes in magic and spells, can also love science? Is it possible to integrate the two or are the so apposed to one another, it’s like trying to find commonality within differing religions? (*teehee* just couldn’t help myself with that one)

No, in fact it’s not all that hard because I believe that spirituality and science are striving to achieve the same purpose. We humans are innately curious as to how the world around us works, why things behave as they do, and want to answer that fundamental question, “what the heck are we doing here?” Wicca and Science are both attempting to answer those questions. We’re just choosing different methods and different theorems to do it.

I’ve said before that most Witches are pragmatic people and generally subscribe to Evolution and Science, I’m sure that there are acceptations, but I’ve yet to meet them. I’m reading a book right now called the Science of Witchcraft http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obi..., which is of course about how science can explain things such as spells and magic. In one of my articles “Spells and the Modern Witch, http://www.tblog.com/template... ” I also talk about these ideas. I haven’t read much of this book yet, but so far I like it.

It follows a similar vein as “The Quark and The Jaguar” a book by Murray Gell-Mann http://www.santafe.edu/~mgm/ who won the Nobel prize for discovering Quarks, and a book called “Quantum Mind” by Arnold Mindell http://www.aamindell.net/publ..., who studies the phenomenon that is Quantum physics, Shamanic styles of healing and what could be called magic.

I can’t remember if it was in one of those books where a physicist is quoted to have said the further we delve into the Quantum level of Physics the closer we get to God, or if it was somewhere else. But I truly believe that. We reach a point where, how else can we explain such phenomenon light being both a particle and a wave? How certain quantum experiments had different results depending on who was in the room when the experiment was performed?

I think that there are things in the universe that we will never be able to explain. I’m not sure that we’re supposed to; the mystery is what makes it so exciting, intriguing, and curious. There are things in the universe that we just have to accept that “God/dess made it that way,” like quasars, nebula, and platypus.

Yet I also believe that when we do explain something, when we do figure out why something is the way that it is, we’re not taking God out of it. God/dess gave us this ability to be intelligent, so we’re just using our “god given talents”.

Now just hold on there a minute sparky! You say. Does this give us the right to clone humans, genetically modify foodstuff? We can do it; people have the ‘god given talent’. Here we’re waltzing into some pretty deep water; deep water in which our ‘god given talent’ could abandon us to drown.

Just because we can doesn’t mean we should. Mapping the stars, exploring the cosmos is different from altering the genetic makeup of life on this planet. Have we gotten so caught up in proving we can that we’re forgotten the biggest questions?

Why? And,
Should we?

Wow, I didn’t intend to wander this far down this garden trail. Personally when it comes to answering these questions, I really don’t know.

I was planning to muse on the ideas behind magic and science. I was going to revisit things I talked about in Spells and the Modern Witch, http://www.tblog.com/template... ideas about probability enhancement, matter vs. energy and quantum’s. Instead I walked right into one of the biggest debates of our time. Something that during Carl Sagan’s http://www.carlsagan.com time, the time of Cosmos, wasn’t more than a glimmer of potential.

All of this, this post and these thoughts as just babies in my head. I don’t have it all worked out. I’m musing on thoughts that have been brought up by my new friend Carl. I’m looking forward to watching the next episode, and continuing my thoughts on this subject.

Cosmos- Carl Sagan
12.29.05 (2:04 pm)   [edit]
Please pardon me, my geek is showing.

we went to Costco today for a stocking up mission. Now I really hate going to costco, I hate all the stuff, all the crap and all the people running around snatching it up like they might run out. We always send more money that we budget on "but it'll get used" stuff. So i usually stay home when the costco run is done.

Today however I went and yes I did find something that i feel made it all worth while- a seven disk box set DVD of Carl Sagans- COSMOS. http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obi...

14 of the shows episodes. Both my Hubbie and i have read Cosmos http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obi... and Contact http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obi... the book rocks over the movie http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obi...! And the movie does rock in it's own right, but goodness gracious me- read the freaking book too!!!

anyways, i'm just sorta geeking out a bit cuz both my hubbie and I have wanted to see Cosmos but it only is playing on the Space channel, which we don't have. We've seen adds for it on Discovery- argh! but we can't see it, but now we can! We bought the set and now I can totally geek out and watch Cosmos!!

And now that I look ad amazon and see how freaking $$$ it is, i'm glad we found it at Costco cuz we paid about half that. *teehee*

Advent Calendar dec 24th- better late than never- Tao and Christianity too
12.28.05 (9:17 am)   [edit]
24. December
Humanity takes its law from the Earth;
the Earth takes its law from Heaven:
Heaven takes its law from the Tao.
The law of the Tao is its being what it is.
LaoTzu

Because I’ve been working and busy with the holidays I sorta dropped the ball on putting up all the advent quotes from the Astro.com site. So If you’re interested in reading them all pop over to http://www.astro.com/h/cal/ca... to read them all. Just click on each number. The above is the Christmas Eve quote, which I really like.

At the risk of sounding condescending I feel like I should post along with the quote some information about Tao to go along with the quote. I have studied Buddhism so I have a small understanding of Tao, but it’s not an aspect of eastern philosophy that I know a lot about and so I did some research to learn more and to understand why this quote may have been chosen for Christmas eve, as apposed to a bible quote, which I know a few people around here will question.

It’s my own personal opinion that the choice of leaving off bible quotes was done on purpose. Not to deny the bibles sacredness but to point out that the MESSAGE of this holiday season is UNIVERSAL, through Christmas has become Christians. (I’m not going to get into the pagan aspects of Dec 25th or any of that in this post.) But as I said that’s my own personal thought on the matter, I have no idea as to why these quotes were chosen and more accurately I haven’t read all the dates in the calendar so there could be a bible quote stuck in there somewhere.

So the Tao, it’s fitting I think then we’re looking at the message of Christmas from a universal standpoint:

Common dictionary translations of Tao include: road, path, way, means, doctrine.
In the Tao Tee Ching, it is generally used to indicate, the unseen, underlying law of the universe from which all other principles and phenomena proceed.

It is described as unnameable, unfathomable and inexhaustible. Taoists attempt to be one with this principle.

Change some of these words to Christ, or God and they sound pretty familiar. The same site site that I got this definition from has this to say about Tao and Christianity:

As people study the Tao, they are often struck by the many similarities to the New Testament. In fact, some Taoists feel that Taoism spread to Israel in Jesus' time, influencing Christ. There are many historical and theological reasons why that is extremely unlikely. Instead, I believe the similarities are due to the universal nature of wisdom. As the Buddha said: Truth is true in all places and times and applies to all people. It isn't surprising then, that wise people in different times and places made the same observations about life.

This section of the New Testament discusses the relationship between God and those who have never directly been exposed to Jesus' teachings:

Romans 1:20,22,23,25

20For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. . .

. . . 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. . .

25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.

It’s interesting that the invisible qualities, eternal power etc described in Romans are also how the concept of Tao is described. In Tao and Buddhism, one dose not worship an image of a Man or Buddha, they honour the “unnameable, unfathomable and inexhaustible”, which is a good definition of God.

Again from the same site:

Bible - Mathew 5:5
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Tao - Chapter 76
The soft and yielding (people) will prevail.

Bible
Those who live by the sword will die by the sword.

Tao - Chapter 74
People who try to take the executioner's place are like people that try to take the Master Carpenter's place.
If you use the Master's tools, you just cut your own hands.

Bible - Proverbs 10:19
The more you talk, the more you are likely to sin.
If you are wise, you will keep quiet.

Tao - Chapter 5
The mouth, on the other hand, becomes exhausted if you talk too much.
Better to keep your thoughts inside you.

With all of this, and that last quote ringing in my ears, I will sign of and return to contemplating the The law of the Tao is its being what it is

The Tao site that the quotes are from: http://www.thetao.info/index....

hey surrogate- turn the other cheek man!
12.27.05 (4:08 pm)   [edit]
Turn the other cheek—

So here’s the story of what the above quote means. Well its one story of its meaning and of course I’m sure that some people out there are gonna come back and say, “no way man”, “how do you know girlie?” Well how do we know anything? Go watch ‘what the bleep do we know’ and don’t bug me.

In olden days, a way long time ago when traditions were different and people ‘boxed ears’ and whacked their slaves. The proper way to discipline the inappropriate actions of a servant or someone of a lesser status was to backhand them across the cheek. Sure these days you can’t so much as raise a hand and pretend to hit someone before you’re arrested and sent to anger management, but things were different back then.

Remember that when Jesus spoke he was often speaking to his fellow Jews and other “lesser” people who would have been low-man-on-the-totem-pole , probably people who were struck by the higher-ups quite often and up to this time would have been told to “grin and bear it”.

When Jesus said to turn the other cheek he was saying to these lesser people “use these masters attempt to humiliate you to humiliate them instead. Turn your cheek as if to say, ‘go ahead, hit my other cheek, for your first attempt did not work.’”

Jesus wasn’t telling people to turn the other cheek and pretend not to notice, not to see, or to “let it slide” as so many people think it means to day. This isn’t a comment of passivity; it’s a comment of Passive Aggression- a non-violent challenge to those in power.

I like that meaning much better. Isn’t entomology grand? Wander over to this site to read some more… http://thetyee.ca/Citizentool...

teach the children
12.18.05 (9:53 am)   [edit]

Just a week before Christmas, I had a visitor. This is how it
happened...

I just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing
to go to bed, when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I
opened the door to the front room and to my surprise, Santa himself
stepped out from behind the Christmas tree. He placed his finger
over his mouth so I would not cry out.

"What are you doing?" I started to ask. The words choked up in my
throat, and I saw he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner
was gone. Gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know.

He then answered me with a simple statement. "TEACH THE CHILDREN!" I
was puzzled. What did he mean? He anticipated my question, and with
one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the
tree.

As I stood bewildered, Santa said, "Teach the children! Teach them
the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that now-a-days Christmas
has forgotten."

Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a FIR TREE and placed
it before the mantle. "Teach the children that the pure green colour
of the stately fir tree remains green all year round, depicting the
everlasting hope of mankind, all the needles point heavenward,
making it a symbol of man's thoughts turning toward heaven."

He again reached into his bag and pulled out a brilliant
STAR. "Teach the children that the star was the heavenly sign of
promises long ago. God promised a Saviour for the world, and the
star was the sign of fulfillment of His promise."

He then reached into his bag and pulled out a CANDLE. "Teach the
children that the candle symbolizes that Christ is the light of the
world, and when we see this great light, we are reminded of He who
displaces the darkness."

Once again he reached into his bag and removed a WREATH and placed
it on the tree. "Teach the children that the wreath symbolizes the
real nature of love. Real love never ceases. Love is one continuous
round of affection."

He then pulled from his bag and ornament of HIMSELF. "Teach the
children that I, Santa Claus symbolize the generosity and good will
we feel during the month of December."

He then brought out a HOLLY LEAF. "Teach the children that the holly
plant represents immortality. It represents the crown of thorns worn
by our Saviour. The red holly represents the blood shed by Him."

Next he pulled from his bag a GIFT and said, "Teach the children
that God so loved the world that he gave... Thanks be to God for his
unspeakable gift.Teach the children that the wise men bowed before
the Holy Babe and presented him with gold, frankincense and myrrh.
We should always give gifts in the same spirit of the wise men."

Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a CANDY CANE and hung
it on the tree. "Teach the children that the candy cane represents
the shepherds' crook. The crook on the staff helps to bring back
strayed sheep to the flock. The candy cane is the symbol that we are
our brother's keeper."

He reached in again and pulled out an ANGEL. "Teach the children
that it was the angels that heralded in the glorious news of the
Saviour's birth. The angels sang 'Glory to God in the highest on
earth peace and good will toward men."

Suddenly, I heard a soft twinkling sound, and from his bag he pulled
out a BELL. "Teach the children that as the lost sheep are found by
the sound of the bell, it should ring mankind to the fold. The bell
symbolizes guidance and return." Santa looked back and was pleased.

He looked back at me and I saw that the twinkle was back in his
eyes. He said, "Remember, teach the children the true meaning of
Christmas and do not put me in the centre, for I am but a humble
servant of the One that is, and I bow down to worship Him, Jesus
Christ our Lord, our God."

Tis written: "In the beginning was the Word!"
Here now I'm balked! Who'll put me in accord?
It is impossible, the Word so high to prize,
I must translate it otherwise
If I am rightly by the Spirit taught.
'Tis written: In the beginning was the Thought!
Consider well that line, the first you see,
That your pen may not write too hastily!
Is it then Thought that works, creative, hour by hour?
Thus should it stand: In the beginning was the Power!
Yet even while I write this word, I falter,
For something warns me, this too I shall alter.
The Spirit's helping me! I see now what I need
And write assured: In the beginning was the Deed!

Too smart for his own good
12.08.05 (5:38 am)   [edit]

This post could also be called, “why you should never leave your two year old unattended next to a computer”

Sure we thought it cute when The Ruler of the Universe started using the mouse himself and could play Dora’s Backpack Adventure all on his own on the computer.

We thought perhaps we had an ultra smart kid the day we realized we could ask him to type all the numbers from one (uno to him- Dora’s influence) to nine on the key pad – and he could do it with only one mistake.

We thought – how nice he’s spending time with granddad- when he’d go downstairs everyday to play Flight Simulator. Now he knows ‘g’ as ‘up’ cuz that’s the key you press to make the landing gear go up and down. Granddad even downloaded a Santa sled to fly.

Of course now everything, cars, frogs, stuffed animals and even the Ruler himself can fly and flies everywhere. And when we ask him what granddad’s name is he says “boat”. This is because they fly out of Vancouver International Airport and immediately land in English Bay- the result of flying a sea plane one day- now all airplanes are boats and even ones that can’t – land in the water.

So sure I questioned whether it was healthy for a two year old to spend so much time on a computer that I was unable to get my own work done. I questioned the getting of a second computer so the ruler can “type two’s” in Word on one while I write on another.

I questioned where I was raising a potential computer geek considering he’s learning his alphabet on a keyboard as well as from his books. I questioned whether or not I should give up my computer time all together to set an example.

Then we thought maybe we’ve got a genius, a phenom, when he figured out how to change the font to 72 and put his 2’s in bold so now he make huge twos for all the world to see.

We thought maybe he IS a genius when we found him playing MindSweeper, and oddly enough, playing it better than I do.

But I had to draw the line. I had to say- okay this is going too far! When we got distracted making dinner last night and then found the Ruler, on the internet. He’d typed God only knows what into a google search and discovered “WinFixer http://www.winfixer.com/”. Not only did he find this website, he downloaded it and ran Winfixer on the computer, I didn’t even know what it does.

Winfixer, btw, is a program that “is the ultimate solution that safeguards your system by cleaning Windows registry, fixing damaged files. Running disk cleanup and detecting hard drive errors. Winfixer protects your system against potential damages and problems, ensuring its optimal performance.” http://www.winfixer.com/

Now thanks to my two year old I’ve got it downloaded on my computer. Once I register it, I think I’ll run it and clean up whatever else the Ruler of the Universe has done to this machine.

I would say that what people really mean by happiness is unlimited consumption.
We are a society of consumers.
I think if you ask people what their concept of Heaven is, they would say, that it is a big department store with new things every week, all the money to buy them.
Actually we are the eternal suckling, the eternal baby who wants the bottle.
Happiness should be not an aim in itself but something that accompanies intense relatedness to many things - to man, to nature - a relatedness that does not exclude deep sadness, because one cannot remain sensitive and responsive to the world without often being deeply sad.

A for real post

Yes I’ve been lax in writing original things at tblog lately, and truth be told, it’s not because I’ve been super ultra uber busy, really, I’ve just been feeling a little lazy. Call it pre birthday and Yule glums if you want, but mostly I’ve just been feeling tired and a little bummed. Not sure the reason, no reason, just glum, it happens this time of year.

Sure I’m excited about the book coming out and I love my birthday and Yule and Christmas (I celebrate both, thank you very much and just cuz EVERYONES whining about it, I say MERRY CHRISTMAS and if you don’t like it, bite me.)

But I actually have some decent news to report: I’ve got a job! A for real job with a pay cheque (check for you Americans) and everything. I’ll be working for Elections Canada. In case you’ve been living under a rock, or err ah America, Canada has a federal election coming up on January 23rd 2006. And just in case it comes up in trivial pursuit or something it’s the 39th election in Canada.

I’ll be working for one of the offices in my electoral district answering the phone and doing general office work. Yippee!! Ya know I haven’t had a pay cheque of my own since 2002, so the idea of having some of my OWN money for Christmas presents, or erm, Holiday presents (haha) is pretty cool.

So that’s my news, oh and here’s a link to the birthday/xmas gift I have asked for. Everyone in my family is going in on its purchase:

If you’d like to contribute to my gift please make your cheques payable to ME! And mail them to my address. Thanks!

Its so cool, its red!

shameless self promotion - Bitter Waters, a novel
12.06.05 (7:05 am)   [edit]
Here's the Email that I'm sending to everyone I know

Yes, this is shameless self promotion.

At sometime in your life you exchanged emails and hopefully friendly words with Andrea Ellis, also known to many of you as Anne. Perhaps you’ve lost touch over time and are now wondering why Andrea, (Anne) is emailing you.

Well as I said this is Shameless self promotion of her First BOOK!

And as to why she’s writing this in third person is anyone’s guess.

Bitter Waters, Andrea Ellis’s first novel is about to be published -Early Publication Date DEC 15th, official Publication JAN 2006.

She’s pretty darn proud of this accomplishment and wants to share the joy, the love and the wonder that is her writing with everyone. (That’s why she’s writing in third person, one can’t say that about themselves in first person without sounding really vain)

Anyway, Bitter Waters, Andrea’s first novel is on its way to being published and she wanted to let you all know about. Here are the websites where you can:

Read the First Chapter:

Read Excerpts from the Book at Bitter Waters Blog:

Buy the Book:

You can also join the mailing list by emailing bitterwatersthenovel@hotm ail.com,

Your email will NEVER be sold or given to a third party cuz Andrea thinks that’s really wrong. Also only by joining the mailing list will you get updates on the Book Launch Party – TBA, but sometime in Jan/Feb., because Andrea Promises never to send big bulk emails out from this addy ever again. (Well maybe that’s a fib, she’ll probably send out one more about the book launch party cuz she’ll be SO excited about it.

But really, you should join the mailing list anyway and show your support of Andrea (Anne) cuz her self esteem is really on the line here, being her first book and all.

Thanks so much for your support and friendship,
Andrea (Anne) or whatever name you know Me by.

Just a little bit about the book, to ahh, wet your appetite:

Andrea Ellis's intriguing first novel Bitter Waters is a raw clash of emotions. Lust, guilt, fear, love... and another dose of guilt grope for attention in this tale of poignant longing.

In Bitter Waters, we find a woman; a good woman and faithful wife who is plunged into temptation after bumping into an old flame. He was her first love, a love laced with the sticky sweetness of innocence stolen from the corner store.

This attraction plays against her marriage and her long held beliefs from a force-fed faith. What ought to have been a comfort for her in times of trial, becomes a hindrance; a smoke screen, obscuring the gut-simple choice between trying to be someone she once was and who she has become.

Black or white? Right or wrong? The choice between giving in to this infatuation and devotion to her husband plays out against and amid her ever weakening faith.

The tender yet tight prose flows honestly making the characters eminently believable.
As the compelling plot unfolds, many of us will easily identify with this flawed but loving woman, whether we like it or not, or perhaps more accurately, whether we admit it or not.

In the depth of my soul there is
A wordless song - a song that lives
In the seed of my heart.
It refuses to melt with ink on
Parchment; it engulfs my affection
In a transparent cloak and flows,
But not upon my lips.

It is a song composed by contemplation,
And published by silence,
And shunned by clamor,
And folded by truth,
And repeated by dreams,
And understood by love,
And hidden by awakening,
And sung by the soul.

New Moon Magic
12.01.05 (7:01 am)   [edit]
Happy December! and Happy New Moon! Here is a little bit about the magic of this time of the month. Enjoy,

NEW MOON MAGIC – (Moon is 0-45 degrees ahead of the Sun). The sun and moon energies are combined in this phase to give great strength to new projects.

TIMING – The New moon rises at dawn and sets at sunset. For best use of this energy, this is when magic should be performed (though not essential) Sun Goddesses such as Sekhmet, Vesta, Heartha can be called on with great success. Rituals focusing on the God are also strong at this time.

WORKINGS – New moon workings can be done from the day of the new moon to 3 days later. Work should manifest by the full moon or next new moon. Things to work for include self improvement, job hunting, networking, health, farms & gardens, and love & romance.

MEDITATIONS – Work on bringing abundance into your world. Picture the harmony you desire, the current needs you have. Make a mind movie about how you want short/long term goals to manifest. Concentrate also on parts of yourself (body, mind or spirit) that need regeneration.

CRESCENT MOON MAGIC – (Moon is 45-90 degrees ahead of the Sun). The crescent faces West (only in the northern hem.); is the home of the Calliech and gates of rebirth and death. The crescent is a symbol of the Goddess, a ladle of love, manifestation and abundance. It is the Holy Cup of her hand, containing mysteries to be showered upon her children. In the mundane world, you should be gathering information, ideas, and laying a foundation for the project you have set into motion through magic. Use small rituals and magical techniques to help your mundane work along. Since the crescent faces West the aid of Aphrodite, Marianne, Themis or Tiamat can be aspected.

TIMING – Moon rises at mid morning, and sets after sunset.

WORKINGS – Three & a half days after new moon through the 7th day. Do some minor magic’s each day to enhance your goals and projects. This is definitely a time for the Goddess and Her female archetypes. Work for animals, business, change, emotions, and matriarchal strength.

MEDITATIONS – Continue working on your mind movie, then slip into Goddess archetype meditations to cultivate a particular quality you would like to instil in your own life.

FIRST QUARTER (WAXING) MAGIC – (Moon is 90-135 degrees ahead of the Sun). Process of building up energy is at this time. Now is time to put on a little extra steam, buck up a few things that are sagging and push forward towards manifestation. Do a small ritual to continue success or bring it on a bit faster.

TIMING – Moon rises at noon and sets at midnight. Sunset is prime time for waxing moon magic. Dusk is auspicious for fairies and their energy. Altar devotions and offerings for the fairy folk in return for a favour will work especially well. This is a wonderful time to work with the Triple Goddess aspect.

WORKINGS – Moon is from 7-10.5 days after new moon. Do workings for courage, elemental magic, motivation, friends, and luck.

MEDITATIONS – Continue to use mind movie. Instinct and intuition are valuable assets in this period – program your mind both in and out of meditation to take advantage of these gifts. Meditate also on Goddess’s and Gods of strength and success in path-working exercises.
